Cepea, 09/04/2025 – Coffee prices have been influenced by uncertainty over the impact of tariffs imposed by the United States government on the global market. According to Cepea researchers, this backdrop has been driving agents away from riskier markets, affecting exchange rates and pressuring bean prices on the exchanges. In addition, the approaching robusta harvest in Brazil is adding to the pressure on prices. In just the first seven days of April, the CEPEA/ESALQ robusta type 6, screen 13-up index, ex-warehouse in Espírito Santo, fell R$ 360,59 per 60 kg bag (or 7,7%), starting the week at an average of R$ 1.586,38 per 60 kg bag, the lowest value since November 18, 2024. Overall, in robusta's case, U.S. tariffs could bring some competitive advantage to the Brazilian sector, according to Cepea researchers. That's because, for Brazil, the export tariff to the U.S. is now 10%, while major competing countries for this variety received much higher rates, 46% for Vietnam and 32% for Indonesia.
